Fire Alarm

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines FIRE ALARM as “a device that makes a loud sound to warn people when there is a fire”.  The reality is that there is so much more to it.

The best type of fire detection is the human nose.  This, however is not the most practical.  In commercial settings, we need something that is reliable both night and day weather or not people are present.  The primary purpose of fire alarm is indeed life safety, but also for protection of property.

Current day fire alarm systems not only notify the occupants to get them out, but through a series of controls can also direct that path, contain fires in specific zones and assist the building controls to minimize damage.  Today’s fire alarm systems monitor other systems such as Fire Sprinklers, HVAC smoke detection, Kitchen Suppression, Clean Agent and even flame detection.  The reality is that we have outsmarted ourselves in the things we use every day to the point that we must protect us from, well, us.

Our industry is regulated by the International Fire Code from the International Code Council, National Fire Protection Association, Texas Department of Insurance State Fire Marshal Office and whatever local Authority Having Jurisdiction be it city or county.  Everything that we use has to be Listed by the Underwriters Laboratory and FM Approved.

Not only do we have to keep up with all of the changing regulations, but with the changing technologies.  The fire alarm of yesteryear was simple and was basically as described by the dictionary.  Fire alarm is now so technology driven that it takes trained personnel just to make basic changes to the systems.

Fire Extinguisher

Fire Extinguishers are your first line of defense in the event of a fire.  It is important to have and maintain the extinguishers at a level that will protect you.  Let’s be honest, for most of us fire extinguishers are something that we don’t pay much attention to until we need it.  The old saying goes, “it’s better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it”.

In the event of a fire we want to be prepared.  Fires spread so rapidly that we need to prevent as much damage as possible before the fire trucks arrive.  As quick as a fire truck is, fire is faster.  Portable fire extinguishers have been a major factor in reducing the spread of fires in both commercial and residential situations.  I have personally dealt with situations where customers used fire extinguishers and were able to save untold amounts of money because they were able to successfully put the fire out.

As important as it is to have a fire extinguisher it is more important to have the right one.  Is it too big or too small?  Is it the right extinguisher for the hazard?  There are many factors to having the correct type, size and placement of fire extinguisher.  There are extinguishers specific to putting out kitchen fires, burning metal fires (yes you read that correctly), costly electronic fires and burning archive papers.

Security Alarms

We now live in different world than our Forefathers did.  It wasn’t all that long ago that we were able to leave our doors unlocked and everything would be fine.  This unfortunately is no longer the case.  We now have many layers of protection for ourselves and our property.  Security systems are now a normal part of life, and the question is do you have one that works for you?

One of the necessities is ease of use.  Do you have to modify your life around your security system?  Do you have to learn an all new cryptic type language just so that you can secure your building or home?  To repeat an new cliche`, we have an app for that.  Life shouldn’t have to be that hard.  I’ve heard on more than one occasion, “wow, that’s easier than the old one”.

Security systems often consist of hardware that lets you know when a door or window has been opened.  Also motion detection to let you know if an intruder has made it in without being detected.  Since the time of the first security alarm systems so many innovations have been made.  Motion detectors have developed so that your pet, in most cases, will not trigger the device, so your pets are free to roam while you are gone.
